Mini review: First Shift – Legacy (Part 6 of the Silo Series)

This is the first of three prequels to the original Wool stories (the next two are due by the end of the year).  Read the omnibus first otherwise this will make no sense.

First Shift has a different tone to the original stories, concentrating more on the thoughts of the main characters.  It takes a while to get going – give it time, it comes together in the end.

Some things are easier to figure out than they should be.  Some of the references to places assume knowledge of the US political structure – it is frustrating that you have to look up Wikipedia before some bits make sense. (I live in the UK).

I fear I will forget some crucial details before reading the next book… I had all the original Wool stories in one book, so I could immediately jump to the next.

One question I have:  why are the characters using today’s technology when the story is set – at its earliest – nearly 40 years in the future?  I found that quite distracting.

Niggles aside, I’m looking forward to the next installments.

Oh yes… it also has a better cover than the Wool stories.
